Pocophone F1 Review
On paper it looks really impressive considering that it costs so low but if you dig deeper you’ll understand why it is priced the way it is priced.
Xiaomi has cut a lot of corners with this phone. The first one is quite obvious in the construction of the phone. The phone is made out of plastic. It costs significantly less to produce a plastic phone than it takes to produce a metal phone or glass phone.
The front display is an IPS LCD with a thick notch and it has slight bezels on the sides. It does have a corning gorilla glass but they haven’t mentioned which glass it is? whether a gorilla glass 5 or 4, probably it’s 4 or lower since they haven’t mentioned it.
It also doesn’t have an oleophobic coating, so the phone picks up grease easily on the front and back, whether you’re browsing and eating a sandwich, or simply touching the phone with clean fingers.
The call quality isn’t good either, indicating that the speaker also wasn’t a priority.
But the biggest reason this phone is so affordable is that Xiaomi is making money off of this phone through advertising. I mean this device comes with full of bloatware. There are apps like UC Browser, Microsoft apps, Amazon app, RAM cleaning apps etc, I mean these companies pay Xiaomi to pre-install their apps on their phone and that’s one of the main reason Xiaomi is able to keep the prices low even with a flagship .
Xiaomi is also not marketing this phone, they’re only reliant on the word of mouth promotions just like how OnePlus started a few years ago.
Companies like Samsung and Apple spend billions on marketing each year and that’s one of the main reasons their devices are so expensive because they include the marketing budget in the final retail cost of the handset. Xiaomi not marketing the phone helps them price this phone very aggressively.
So that said, do companies like Samsung should be worried? Absolutely not…Just because we have Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas doesn’t mean Bentley and Rolls Royce will go bankrupt. The same with phones, people who buy a $1000 phone won’t even look at a $300 one.
This is targeted towards people who can’t or don’t want to spend so much money on a phone. People who want a true flagship from android are willing to spend over 800 bucks anyway.
But for what it is, the POCO cuts the right corners to get it to where it needs to be price wise. We just have to see where it goes.
